Naturopathy is a system of medicine that uses diet and lifestyle therapy, herbal medicine and nutritional supplementation, in order to create balance and promote good health. Naturopathic medicine aims to prevent illness developing, by strengthening the body’s innate ability to heal itself. When sickness strikes – as it sometimes does – an effective treatment will address both the symptoms and the underlying cause.

How does naturopathy work?

Treating the whole person and treating the underlying cause are two fundamental tenets of naturopathy. That is because health – and disease – is affected by a complex set of factors, including physical health, mental health, emotional wellbeing, genetic tendencies, environmental influences, and dietary intake. Naturopaths recognise these intricate interactions; they will recommend treatments aimed at creating overall balance and addressing underlying factors.

For this reason, naturopathy is considered both an art and a science. The art lies in the skill of the practitioner, using knowledge and understanding of patients to develop individual treatment plans. The science lies in the study and diagnosis of human disease processes, as they manifest in the population.

The main therapeutic tools of naturopathy are herbal medicine and nutrition therapy. These have a very real physiological affect on the body, and as such, will significantly improve health conditions. At HealthWise, we use high quality, accredited, practitioner-only products, to ensure that our patients receive the best possible results.

Who can benefit?

Naturopathic treatment is appropriate for anyone, at any age. Whether it is an acute illness, such as a bout of the flu, or a chronic condition, such as recurrent migraines, naturopathy can provide symptomatic relief and treat the underlying cause.

Some examples of where naturopathy may help include:

  • Allergic conditions e.g. asthma, eczema, dermatitis, hayfever
  • Food allergies and intolerances e.g. gluten sensitivity, lactose intolerance, salicylate allergy
  • Acute immune challenges e.g. coughs, colds, flus, bronchitis, swine flu
  • Chronic low immune function e.g. glandular fever, recurrent infections, HIV/AIDS
  • Cancer
  • Auto-immune conditions e.g. lupus, ankylosing spondylitis
  • Fatigue e.g. chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia
  • Weight loss or weight gain
  • Nervous system conditions e.g. anxiety, depression, stress

What happens during a consultation?

The initial consultation will usually take one hour. During this time, you will discuss:

  • The presenting complaint - i.e. the reason you have come into the clinic
  • Any other significant, or diagnosed, conditions
  • Overview of current health – including discussion of digestive function, immunity, hormone balance, nervous system function (e.g. stress levels and energy), diet and lifestyle
  • Health history – including diagnosed conditions, prior treatment, and any recent test results
  • Current medication or supplementation
  • Any other factors affecting your health that you wish to discuss, or that may come up during the course of the consultation.

Some physical diagnostics will also be performed – including blood pressure and heart monitoring, iris analysis, tongue analysis, pulse diagnosis, cell function testing and live blood analysis. These may vary between consultations, depending on the most suitable diagnostic requirements at the time. If there is a particular test you would like performed, please let us know in advance.

Follow up consultations are usually shorter – anywhere between 15 and 30 minutes. During this time, your practitioner will follow-up on previous recommendations and monitor your progress. It gives you a chance to catch up on how you’re feeling and discuss anything else that may have changed between visits.

How much will it cost?

Initial consultation (approximately 1 hour) $ 80
Long follow-up (approximately ½ hour) $70
Short follow-up (approximately ¼ hour) $55

All consultations are eligible for Health Fund rebates.
