Magnesium

Another important mineral for the prevention of osteoporosis is magnesium. Some researchers in Europe have gone as far as stating that osteoporosis is a magnesium deficiency disease.

Bone mineral metabolism is regulated by the parathyroid gland. This gland controls the absorption of calcium from the gut and its excretion from the body. The parathyroid gland's ability to regulate calcium is very much dependant upon magnesium. In cases of magnesium deficiency, the parathyroid gland is less able to recognise situations of excess or deficient levels of calcium in the blood and respond. Thus, magnesium deficiency can give rise to an inappropriate leaching of calcium from the bones which will subsequently reduce bone density.

Magnesium is present in most foods, however, whole grains, nuts, seeds, green leafy vegetables and cocoa are especially rich sources. Some of the best sources include oatmeal, chocolate and spinach.
